Applying for a driving licence for categories AM, A, A1, A2 or A for the first time
With the AM driving licence category, you can drive two- and three-wheeled mopeds and four-wheeled light motor vehicles.
With driving licence category A1, you can drive motorbikes with an engine capacity of up to 125 cubic centimetres and an output of up to 11 kW.
With driving licence category A2, you can drive motorbikes with an output of up to 35 kW and no more than 70 kW.
With driving licence category A, you can drive motorbikes and three-wheeled motor vehicles.
The AM, A1, A2 and A driving licence categories are issued for an unlimited period.
To obtain the licence, you must pass a theoretical and practical test.

Prerequisite
- You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany.
- The minimum age for category AM is 15 years.
- The minimum age for category A1 is 16 years.
- The minimum age for category A2 is 18 years.
- The minimum age for category A is 24 years for motorbikes with direct access, 21 years for three-wheeled motor vehicles with a power of more than 15 kW or 20 years for motorbikes with a previous possession of category A2 of at least 2 years.

Deadlines
The application for initial issue of a driving licence expires if the theory test has not been passed within 12 months of receipt of the test order or the practical test has not been passed within 12 months of passing the theory test.

You will receive your first driving licence (with the exception of AM, L and T) on probation. The probationary period lasts 2 years.
